Hering noted that \u201cLedum has often been given to horses when they go lame and draw up their legs. \nThe pains move upward.\u201d \nLed. occupies the second place in Teste's Am. group, in which are also Crot-t., Ferr., Mang., Rhus-t., and Spig. \nAccording to him, the sphere of Led. is frequently identical with that of Am. \nHowever, Led. has a special action on the capillary system in parts where cellular tissue is wanting and where \na dry, resisting texture is present, as in the fingers and toes. \u201cIt is, perhaps for this reason that it acts better on \nthe small joints than on the large joints,\u201d hence its appropriateness in gout.  \nRheumatism and gout that migrates from joint to joint, generally from feet upward. Pains shoot upward (Kalm., \ndownward). Symptoms are worse from warmth, better by sitting with feet and legs in cold water. The warmth \nof the bed is intolerable, he must get up and walk about. \nTeste describes the characteristic skin affection of Led. as a sor t of bluish or violet -colored tuberosities, \nespecially on the forehead. M., 38, drove a rusty spike through his left foot near the arch of the \ninstep, glancing to the inside of the foot without passing through the bone. This was at 5 p.m. At 8 p.m. a report \nwas brought to Yingling relating the events. \nA few momen ts after the accident the patient felt stiffening pains in the foot, running up the leg and rapidly \nincreasing \nin severity. Great chilliness with chattering of teeth followed. The lower jaw became somewhat stiff, general \nshivering, the neck felt stiff. \nThe patient reported that he \u201ccan't endure it much longer.\u201d Led. 3x was sent and rapid improvement took place \nfrom the first dose. Carleton completed the cure of a case of primary syphilis in which Aur. had done well, where the feet were \nheld to the earth as by a magnet when attempting to move, when moving felt as if pricked with needles.  \nThe pain rising gradually from feet to head, every joint and muscle of body and limbs stiff and sore, sore night-\nsweats, great emaciation with loss of appetite. Led. 200c in water, cured completely and speedily.  \nDr. R. Hilbert, a German physician, obtained very satisfactory results from the use of an infusion of the leaves \nof Led. as an expectorant in bronchitis. He stated that the feeling of pain along the trachea, which is \ncharacteristic of the early stages of acute bronchitis, disappeared after a few doses of the remedy.  \nThe fever rapidly subsided, especially in the case  of children.
