Organic heart disease with much edema of lower limbs and
scanty urination. Enlarged prostate and retention of urine. Uric and phosphatic. Gonorrhea. Cystitis.
Hansen confirmed the value of Stigm. in 20 drop doses of the fluid extract in organic heart disease with dropsy,
much edema of lower limbs and scanty urination. He mentioned also as suitable cases kidney stones
with nephritic ulcer and discharge of small stones, red sand and blood.
Chronic pyelitis from catarrh. Chronic retention of urine w ith great tenesmus after urinating. Suppression of
urine with lack of solids and low specific gravity. Bladder ca tarrh, tenesmus of neck of bladder, ammoniacal
urine, much mucus. Chronic gonorrhea, prostate involved, painful urination.
Bladder - Cystitis. Tenesmus after urinating. Bladder catarrh. Gonorrhea.
Kidneys - Kidney stones, nephritic colic. Suppression and retention of urine. Dysuria. Blood and red sand in
urine.
COMMENTS - J. H. Cook gave an account of Stigm. in the Med. Cent. He quoted the re sults of Dumont’s
investigation of its action on the heart: “It makes the heart's action slower and stronger. Regulates its rhythm.
Its diuretic action is manifested first. Its action is more powerful and evident in cardiac dis orders with dropsy.
With the disappearance of the dropsy arterial tension increases and venous tension diminishes.”
Cook gave the case of Mr. X., 63, florid, robust, temperature, had been many months under treatment with
intense prostration, intermittent pulse, and dyspnea, traced originally to cooling off too rapidly when perspiring.
The urine contained much albumen, mucus and some blood, specific gravity 1010. Great tenderness over
entire abdomen, especially in region of ureters. Under remedies he would improve for a few days, whe n a
slight chill would be followed by fever and the symptoms would come back in full force.
The microscope revealed pus cells and granular epithelial cells in abundance. Stigm. was then given, a
teaspoonful of the fluid extract every four hours. In less th an a week there was visible improvement. The
constant calls to urinate ceased and the patient could go through the night without being disturbed more than
once or twice.
The specific gravity of the urine increased and pus, blood and albumen disappeared. On ly a little abdominal
tenderness remained, which did not prevent the patient from attending to his business and enjoying life.
Another use of Stigm. was communi cated to the profession by Dr. J. W. Pruitt. Pruitt’s son took a chill in the
Arkansas river bottom. The chills were stopped with the usual remedies, Chin., Fen., Pipe., but every fourteen
days would come back with increased severity.
Presently gastric symptoms set in with anemia and other symptoms of chronic - ity. “Shuck tea” was
recommended by a lay friend and was taken for one day only. There was never a chill after. Pruitt thence
forward used Stigm. largely and he found it was only in the chronic cases that it was beneficial.
