# Strophanthus Hispidus ## Remedy Classification - **Type:** Herbal Remedy - **Miasm:** Psoric Miasm - **Temperament:** Neutral - **Aggravation Time:** Neutral/Anytime ## Keynote Indications Strophantus is an ornamental, evergreen and a climbing shrub, native of tropical Africa and Asia. The mother tincture comes from the seeds of the plant. It is used as an arrow-poison by natives of Africa. Among the alkaloids is strophanthin. Stroph. occasions no gastric distress, di uretic. It has no cumulative action, safe for corpulent, aged persons with rigid arteries, as it does not affect the vaso -motors. Restores tone to a weak tissue, especially of the heart muscle and valves. Stroph. increases the contractile power of all striped muscles, especially the heart, increa sing the systole and diminishing the rapidity. Acts on the heart increasing the systole and diminishes the rapidity. Tones the heart and run off dropsical effusions. Especially useful in failing compensation dependent upon fatty heart. After the long use o f stimulants. Arteriosclerosis, rigid arteries of aged. Precordial anxiety. Retro sternal pain. Functional disturbances of heart from alcohol, tobacco, tea. In small doses for weak heart, that feels enlarged. In mitral regurgitation, where edema and dropsy have supervened (Dig.). Severe prostration from hemorrhage after operations and acute diseases. Anemia with palpitations and loss of breath. Faintness. Pneumonia. Rapid alternations of symptoms with slow pulse. Undulating sensation in whole body. Throbbings. Stitching pains. Twitchings of the muscles. Obesity. Increased secretions. Nausea with special disgust for alcohol. Alcoholism, with drop doses of Stroph- h. tincture. Hives. Exophthalmia goiter. ## Modalities (Aggravations / Ameliorations) Better from rest, lying down. Worse from exertion, exercise, standing. Worse tobacco, tea, alcohol. Undulations in head. - COMMENTS-The homeopathic proving was conducted by Templeton on five provers, us ing 2x, 3x, 6c, 12c, 30c and by O’ Hanlon on twelve provers, using 6c, 12c and 30c. - Piedvache proved the tincture, but only with reference to the pulse. - Gise vius proved Stroph -h. - tincture, beginning with 5 drops increasing to 80 drops during the five days of his proving. - Matthes proved Stroph -h. - tincture in 10 drops doses. - Some well -marked symptoms were pro duced on two chemists from preparing the tincture. - Other effects curative and pathogenetic have been observed on patients taking the drug. - Stroph -h. - disorders the digestion, causes burning in the esophagus and stomach, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. - A. - P. - Skworzow gave an infusion of Stroph. - to an alcoholic, 63, for weak heart and intermittent pulse, 7 drop doses three times a day. - The first dose caused nausea and a repugnance to alcohol which proved to be permanent. - The man entirely discontinued the habit. - On this hint, Stroph. - was given to two other alcoholics with the same result of abolishing the taste for alcohol. - It caused nausea and profuse sweating and the sudden withdrawal of alcohol was not attended with delirium. - A case of Clarke’s illustrates the gastric and cardiac action of the remedy. - W. - G., 16, a delicate -looking boy, was admitted to a hospital. - He had rheumatic pains for three months and an attack of rheumatic fever two years previously. - He had been laid up a month before admission and a week before was taken with cough, shivering and occasional vomiting. - When admitted, he had a frequent, short, dry cough, worse lying down, had to be propped up in bed, had edema of feet, especially left. - Tongue white, unable to retain any food for three d ays, no pain after food, but much flatulence, belchings giving much relief. - Heart greatly dilated, pulsation diffused, double mitral bruit. - Dullness at bases of both lungs, moist rales, halfway up right lung. - Expectoration of bright blood for seven days. - Stroph. - tincture, one drop every four hours, was given. - Improvement in all the symptoms was immediate, sickness, cough, hemoptysis and dropsy all disappeared and the heart sounds had cleared up to a large extent when the boy went home, less than three weeks after admission. - Hamer mentioned that Stroph. - cured “functional disturbance of the heart from alcohol tobacco and tea.” This agrees with the relation of Stroph. - to alcoholism and symptoms of indigestion. - A writer gave his experience with Stroph. - : a woman had constant outbursts of urticarial rash dating from exposure to an offensive effluvium from a dead whale cast on the sands. - The attacks would recur after drinking a glass of table beer. - Stroph-h. - cured. - Any accompanying cardiac weakness would be an addi tional indication. - The same writer considered Stroph. - of great service in the anemia of young girls when palpitation and breathlessness are marked features. - An accidental proving on a girl of five was made through the mother giving twenty drops of the tinc ture by mistake. - Some half an hour later her face was flushed, lips scarlet, eyes brilliant, temperature raised, skin dry, tongue normal. - Pupils quivering, dilating and contracting every few seconds. - Pulse 140, arteries distended. - Heart sounds vigorous, slight regurgitant mitral murmur. - Intellect clear, precociously loquacious during the five hours the poison ous symptoms lasted. - The pains are aggravated by movement. - Heaviness and pain in forearms and the fingers. - Liver - Pressure in liver region. ### Neck & Back - Joint and muscular pains in the limbs, back and lumbar region with stiffness, muscular weakness, coldness at the limbs. - Causations - Alcohol, tea, tobacco. ### Skin - Hives, chronic, receding. - Urticaria, especially more chronic forms.
