Nervous systems that demand a permanently soothing and sustaining influence. Nerve prostration. Numbness and distention in various parts. Intense neuralgic pains. Spasms. Epileptic attacks, while walking or standing he frequently falls down suddenly with consciousness. Sensitive to least touch, noise or start. Effects of shock, blows, mental distress. Ailments from excess of care and worry with constipation and heaviness. Broken- down, “worn-out” women with uterine and menopausal disorders. Dryness of mucus membranes, skin. Tendency to boils, especially in children. Enlarged glands. Affections of the antrum of Highmore. Malnutrition. Emaciation. Marasmus, children do not thrive in spite of feeding and medicines. Sour smell from the body (Rob.), especially in children, with vomiting, regurgitation, stools etc. Catarrhal condi tion of stomach and bowels with marked acidity. Tendency to constipation after nervous strain. Walking fatigues, causes involuntary urination, prickings in rectum, smarting leu - corrhea. Symptoms worse from cold winds or weather. Cannot bear hands covered, yet chilled by uncovering. COMMENTS - Cooper said that water con taining magnesia, a nd that coming from magnesia limestone districts, is peculiarly soft feeling. It is often found that the physi cal characteristics of substances correspond with their dynamic influences, so there is reason for supposing that this softness has a soothing ef fect upon the nervous system when used in baths. Mag-c. is to exhausted nerves what Chin, is to exhaustion from loss of fluids. Worn -out condition, often produced during pregnancy or menses as these are an additional tax on a women's strength. Characteristic sensitiveness, mental and bodily, sensitivity to touch, to cold air. The least touch causes starting. Sensitiveness passes into neuralgic pains of the highest intensity. Lightening -like neuralgia, worse on the left side, insupportable during repose, must get up and walk about. Tired and painful feeling, especially the legs and feet, aching, restless. Head injuries from shock, blows, mental distress. Unrefreshing sleep, more tired on waking than on going to bed. Periodic symptoms, every second day, every three weeks, “all symptoms worse every third week.” Worse from touch and pressure, but pressure in abdomen is better during the menstrual flow. Pain is worse on the side lain on. Smoking aggravates the headache. Spasmodic disorders of stomach and intes tines. Sour taste, breath, belchings, vomiting. Incarcerated gas causing severe abdominal pains. Colic with gas and bloating, cutting and stabbing pains in the abdomen (Cham.), with irritability. Diarrhea, green stools like the scum of a frog pond, jelly-like lumps, aphthae. Stool like chopped spinach, green flakes in stool (Cham.). Stool smells sour (Rheum.). Puny and sickly children, who refuse their milk and get pain in the stomach if they take it. Food passes undigested in nursing children. Neonatal jaundice with gas, bloating and colic, light -colored stools and failure to thrive (Aeth.). Marasmus. Inordinate craving for meat in children of tubercular parentage, averse to vegetables. Teething (Cham.), with colic. Cooper mentioned it as a possible remedy in pyorrhea alveolaris. Menses preceded by labor -like pain, cut ting colic, backache, weakness, chilliness. Menses late and scanty, flow only at night or when lying down, cease when walking. Flow acrid, dark, pitch -like, difficult to wash off. Vomiting and toothache during pregnancy. Cooper gave the indication as a “worn -out women,” that is, the state of nervousness induced by excess of cares and worries of life. Mag -c. 200c, repeated three or four times a day, has given untold relief to many a patient of this kind. When constipation and heaviness are present these will be removed at the same time. Two cases of neuralgia, related by A. I. Harvey, are quoted in Amer. Hom. The first case is that of a carpenter. 50, who had a light complexion, spare. He had facial neuralgia for two years coming in attacks, lasting from three to seven days, at intervals of two or three weeks. Sharp pain, shooting from left side of face and head, worse at night, from pressure, from jar. Mag-c. cured promptly after the failure of Spig. The second case was that of a blacksmith, 22, who had a light complexion, full figure. For several years he had attacks of facial neuralgia coming on after taking cold. Very severe pain in the left orbital region, shoot ing down into the eye and fa ce and back to occipital region. Begins in morning, grows worse until noon, then subsides. No pain at night, rests well. Spig. and Kali-bi. failed. Mag-c., cured promptly. Temperature - Chilly in evening. Chilly, takes cold, before menses. Chill running down back. Chill, better out - door exercise. Fever at night, with night sweats and aversion to uncovering. Fever with dread of exposure, restlessness, sweat on head, redness and burning. Great heaviness in bloated abdo men. Rumbling, gurgling. Dragging pain towards pelvis. Much flatus in bowels, with diarrhea. Cutting about navel better Magnesia carbónica passing flatus. Very heavy, contractive, pinching pain in right iliac region. Colic better bending double. Cutting, gripping, pressing colic, followed by thin green stools, which aggravates. Colic followed by leucorrhea. Nibbling appetite. Aversion to vege tables, green food, green fruit. Craving for meat, fruits, acids, vegetables, bread and butter. Milk is refused, passes undigested in nursing children. Worse from milk. Worse starchy food, potatoes, cabbages. Violent thirst for water, at night. ## Modalities (Aggravations / Ameliorations) Better motion. Better walking in open air. Better warm air. Cold water improves toothache for a short time, then aggravates. Worse rest, warmth of be d, uncovering. Worse every second day, every third week. Worse cold, wind. Worse change of weather. Worse drafts, night. Draft aggravates facial neuralgia. Pains are worse by rest insupportable, must get up and walk about. ## Symptoms by System ### Mind - Mental exhaustion. - Worse from mental exertion. - Brain fag. - Concentration difficult while writing. - Pain above margin of right orbit. - Pain in the head, as if the hair were pulled, worse stooping. - Sinking of occipital bone in marasmic children. - Rush of blood to head when smoking. - Hair falls out. - Black motes before the eyes. - Dimness of sight. ### Ears - Inflammation of the ears with external redness and sensation of great soreness. - Numbness of outer ear. - Feeling of distention of middle ear. - Subdued tinnitus. - Whizzing, buzzing, fluttering in right ear. - Diminished hearing. - Deafness, comes suddenly and varies, on taking cold, cutting wisdom tooth. ### Face - Waxy pallor. - Slovenly expression. - Tension, as of white of an egg, dr ied on it. - Tearing, digging, boring pain on one side, must move about. - Swelling of malar bone with pulsating pain, worse exposure to cold wind, during rest and at night. ### Mouth - Bitter, sour taste. - Dry, at night. - Sticking pain in throat, hawking up fetid, pea -colored particles. - Vesicular erup tion, bloody saliva. - Frequent, sudden stammering speech. - Teeth feel too long. - Toothache, especially during pregnancy, worse at night, cold and quiet, better cold dri nks. - Ailments from cutting wisdom teeth (Cheir.). - Nose - Vesicular eruption in nose with pressive pain. - Chronic affections of nose. - Dry coryza, breathes through mouth. - Coryza and nasal stoppage, before menses. - Nosebleed in morning. - Perspiration - Sour, greasy perspiration, difficult to wash off. - Sweat stains yel low. - Sweats with thirst after 12 p.m. - until morning. ### Throat - Sore throat with shooting pain when speaking and swallowing. - Sore throat, worse before mens es. - Sticking pain in throat, worse talking and swal lowing. - Burning pain in throat and palate. - Frequent rising of mucus in throat. - Soft, fetid tubercles of color of peas are hawked up. - Hawks up cheesy masses from throat. ### Chest - Oppression of chest, with sensation of constrictions. - Constrictive pains in chest with dyspnea. - Shooting pains in chest. - Soreness in chest during motion. - Constitutions - Suited to ailing, worn out, nervous, flatulent and flabby persons, especially women, children, nurslings. - Persons of lax tissue and sour smell. - Hering noted it for “persons, especially children or irritable disposition, nervous temperament, lax tissue, sour smell.” Cooper indicated i t for “worn-out women and dark- haired, sensitive people, spare and thin.” Sharp pain from within outward in precordial region. ### Stomach & Abdomen - Sensation of emptiness in stom ach. - Constrictive pain in stomach. - Pains, as from ul ceration. - Sour eructations and heartburn after cabbage, potatoes, greasy food, or milk. - Acidrisings. - Sour belching and vomiting of bitter water. - Eructations tasting of rotten eggs during pregnancy. - Nausea and vertigo during a meal, followed by retching, and vomiting of bitter or salty serum. - Nausea and sour vomiting during pregnancy, during colic. - Vomiting of undigested milk. ### Urinary & Genital - Kidneys - Involuntary urination while walking or rising from a seat. - Frequent emission of urine, even at night. - Sensation of burning and excoriation when urinat ing. - Bladder and rectum become irritable. - Urine, increased, pale, watery, or green. - White sediment in urine. - Craves open air. - Tickling cough with salty, bloody expectoration. - Cough from tickling in the larynx, worse in evening till after midnight. - Cramp-like cough at night. - Expectoration of tubercles as big as a pea, very offensive in smell. - Expectoration of blood. - Inguinal and scrotal hernia. - Discharge of prostatic fluid when passing flatus. - Smarting pain when walking or sitting, with leucorrhea. ### Extremities - Heavy, tired and painful legs and feet. - Swelling in bend of knee. - Cannot put left foot on ground when walking. - Tearing in shoulders as if dislocated. - Right shoulder painful, cannot raise it (Sang.). - Cannot bear hands covered, yet chilled by uncovering. - Liver - Hardness and sharp pains in liver region. ### Neck & Back - Pain in back and small of ba ck at night, as if broken. - Violent bruised pain in back at night. - Stiffness in neck. - Tearing and pullings in nape of neck. - Pain as if dislocated on raising arm. - Shootings pain in loins. - Sudden piercing in coccyx. - Contusive pains in sacrum and back, at night. - Causations - Ailments from injuries, accidents. - Ailments from emotional excitement, mental distress. - Ailments from anger, fit of passion, vexation, fright or fear. - Ailments from grief, sorrow, worry, care. - Ailments from pregnancy. - Ailments from dentition, cutting wisdom teeth. - Poor nutrition, milk. ### Skin - Hair and nails unhealthy. - Earthy, sallow and parchment -like, emaciation. - Sore, dry, sensitive to cold. - Violent itching and great dryness of skin. - Itching vesicles on hands and fingers. - Large nodosities between the skin and the flesh with shoot ing pains. - Nettle -rash with much swelling. - Small painless, red tetters, which exfoliate. - Spreading blisters. - Small blood boils. - Corroding vesicles. ### Sleep - Frequent and violent yawing. - Inclination to go to sleep during day. - Sleeplessness from flatus, from cutting wisdom -teeth, exhaustion. - Many anxious dreams, with talking, cries, and starting fromfright. - Dreams of fire, flood, robbers, quarrels. - Dreams of money, pl easures, misfortunes. - Dreams of dead persons. - Awakes at 2 a.m. - or 3 a.m. - and cannot fall to sleep. - Unrefreshing sleep, more tired in the morning than on retiring. ### Generalities - As if everything was turning around. - As if hair was pulled. - As if white of egg had dried on face. -
