# Kali Hydriodicum ## Remedy Classification - **Type:** Homeopathic Remedy - **Miasm:** Tubercular Miasm - **Temperament:** Chilly - **Aggravation Time:** Morning ## Keynote Indications Potassium iodide was used as anti-syphilitic remedy and is also antidotal to mercury. Kali- i. is perhaps more anti-scrofulous than anti-syphilitic. It acts best in scrofulous patients, especially if syphilis or mercurialization, or both, are added. It also causes infiltration, edema and dropsy of various kinds. The blood is acted upon and hemorrhage occurs, and purpura hemorrhagica. Grimmer said Kali -i. cured many types of tumors and cancers generally based on a syphilitic or tubercular miasms, and often there is a combination of both these in many cases of malignancy. Nightly aggravations of complaints. Hering spoke of Kali-i. as having been curative in pneumonia and Bright's disease. Specific for aneurysm. Has been commended as a protective against foot and -mouth dis ease in cattle. In material doses, for fungoid disease (thrush, ringworm, etc. ) and bacterial diseases like tuberculosis. Syphilis. In acute form with evening, r emitting fever, going off in nightly per spiration. Second stage, mucus membranes and skin ulcerations. Tertiary symptoms, nodes. Glandular swellings. Glands enlarged and indurated. Glands are swollen or atro phied. Dropsy from pressure from swollen glands. Infiltrations, edema. Profuse, watery, acrid coryza, especially when associated with pain in frontal sinus. Discharges are copious, watery, acrid, salty, thick, green or foul. Spitting blood. Exostosis, swelling of the bones and rickets. Feels used up. C rushing or sharp stitching pains. Diffused soreness after pains of affected part. Pains long after injury. Coldness of painful part in bones. Purpura and hemorrhagic diathesis. Diffused sensitiveness, of glands, scalp, etc. Rheumatism in neck, back, and feet, especially heels and soles. Rheumatism, worse cold and wet. Contraction of muscles and tendons, chronic arthritis with spurious ankylosis. Weakness, emaciation. Arteriosclerosis. Cachexia. Actinomycosis. Fungoid diseases. Tea-taster's cough due to inha ling the fungus. Craves motion in open air. Brings about often favorable reaction in many chronic ailments even when not clearly symptomatically indicated. COMMENTS-Kali-i. is used in both potency and the crude salt, the general explanation is that the solvent action of the drug is most powerfully excited on new tissues. Cancer. Tumors of the breast and uterus. Condylomata. Glandular swelling. Thyroid problems or goiter, with green discharge. Enlarged lymphatic glands, syphilitic nodes. Neuralgic or inflammatory conditions where there is heightened and diffused sensitiveness of the affected part. Serous effusion on the brain, secondary to hepatization of the lungs. Relieves the throbbing, pulsative noises, especially when the heart is hypertrophied and inclined to fatty degeneration. Laryngeal and pulmonary tuberculosis. Deep, hollow, hoarse cough with pain through breast. Stitches through the lungs in the middle of sternum, through sternum to back or deep in chest while walking. Chest symptoms worse in early morning 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. Expectoration is greenish, copious and looks like soapsuds. Chronic sinusitis. Thick, green mucus. Coryza recurs repeatedly from every little cold and makes the nose red and swollen. Coryza, discharge is acrid, watery, the eyes smart and are puffed. Lachrymation. Iritis, keratitis and chemosis. Thick, green offensive discharge, ozaena and perforation of the bones may occur. Scrofulous and syphilitic eruptions. Papu lar and pustular eruption, especially on scalp and down back, the pustules leaving scars when they heal. Tinnitus aurium, sharp, shrill, hissing and piercing noises. Terrible pain at the root of the tongue. Disordered dige stive tract. Loss of appetite and indigestion with flatulence and bloating (Lyc.). Loose stools at 5 a.m. (Merc.). May crave or be aggravated by milk. Headache worse 5 a.m., worse after a night's rest. heat. The chill of intermittent fever is not better by warmth, but many symptoms of the teeth and scalp are alleviated by warmth. Rickets. Sciatica (Naphtin.). Burning, better slow walking, worse sitting, at night, lying on painful side, rest, standing, heat (Rhus-t., better heat). General aversion to heat. Motion aggravates, especially walking, after the first movement in the lower limbs it is more bearable. Sitting hurts and flexing limbs helps some of the pains. Worse from touch. Great sensitiveness to atmospheric changes, better in open air. Especially suitable for pale, delicate subjects who flush easily and are manifestly plethoric. For a diffused arterial vasiculosis or venous state. Warm-blooded, violent, destructive people. Several cases of abdominal tumor were successfully treated with Kali-i. in 3x, 10c and 15c triturations. Two of these had been unsuccessfully treated with the crude salt. Patients could not tolerate it on account of loss of appetite and irritation of the mucus membrane of mouth and throat. One of these patients had a large tumor o n the level of the great curvature of the stomach extending on both sides, plunging into the abdominal cavity and extending into the pelvis, it was adherent and difficult to define. She had ajaundiced, dirty-looking skin and loss of appetite and vomi ted most of her food. A suspicion of latent syphilis led Gaudy to the remedy, which was perfectly tolerated in potency, though not in the crude. Health rapidly improved and in three months there was hardly any tumor to be discovered. Cooper reported a second case in which a patient's womb was packed with fibroids and there was pain in the right inguinal region on exertion. Spirits were depressed, tinnitus like the buzzing of flies, constantly tired, sleepy feeling down the limbs, hot burning feet, though sometim es intense shivering all over. Pains in the breasts, which were tender. Patient was unable to go long without food, constant distention as from flatus, sinking at scrobiculus cordis at 11 a.m., dreamy sleep. Kali-i. 30c left the patient in absolute comfort. Cooper pointed out the characteristic diffused sensitiveness over affected parts that appeared in the provings. Hartlaub and Trinks noted the provers' experience of the painful scalp on scratching, as if ulcerated (after eleven days). Swelling of the whole thyroid gland increasing very rapidly with some sensitiveness to touch and pressure. Temperature - Chilly in bones. Chilly in painful parts. Uncovers, then chilly. Chills with drowsiness. Alternate heat and chil l. Heat with shudders. Fever in evening. Hot and dry, then drenching sweat. Fever with shuddering. Flushes, with dullness of head. Flatulence with air hunger. Squeaking or clucking noise in abdomen. Sudden painful bloating of abdomen. Cutting and burning pain around navel. Swollen spleen after intermittent. Inguinal glands swollen. Aversion to all food, to broth. Much thirst. Cold food and drink aggravate. All symptoms worse by drinking cold milk. ## Modalities (Aggravations / Ameliorations) Better from motion, cold, open air. Worse from heat, warm clothing or warm room, damp weather, changing weather. Worse pressure, touch, jarring, mercury, seaside, sunset to sunrise. Vision - Dim and foggy vision, after scrofulous ophthalmia. - Blurred vision and diplopia, only notices when looking to left. - Complete blindness from effusion of water in brain. - Blindness with dilated pupils, staring, watery eyes. ### Head - Headache and heaviness in head. - Severe headache with lachrymation. - Bi lateral headaches. - Violent headaches, as if screwed, through sides of head, worse warmth and pressure. - Hard painful lumps on cranium with headache. - Congestive headache. - Aching pain in sinuses. - Intense pain over eyes and root of nose. - Sharp pain in forehead on stooping. - Brain feels enlarged. - Big head and small jaws, rickets. - Pain in scalp on scratching, as if ulcer ated. - Meningitis. - Hydrocephalus. - Scalp fissured and sore. - Tender spots on head. - Hair changes color and falls off. - Headache and heaviness in head. - Severe headache with lachrymation. - Bi lateral headaches. - Tearing pain in right ear. - Boring pain in the ears. - Otitis media. - Membranae ty mpani depressed with adhesions. - Noises in ear. - Tinnitus. - Deafness. ### Face - Red face, with anxiety and restlessness. - Blotches on cheeks. - Facial neuralgias. - Sharp pain in upper jaw. - Tight pain at zygomata. - Glutinous mucus on lips in a.m. - Dry, chapped lips. - Swelling and sup puration of submaxillary glands. ### Mouth - Offensive odor from mouth. - Bitter taste, salty on waking. - Increased saliva, bloody with a sweetish or disgusting taste. - Saliva smells like onions. - Viscid, salty saliva during pregnancy. - Heat in whole mouth with swelling. - Numbness of mouth, in morning on waking. - Ulcers in mouth, as if coated with milk. - Nose - Red, swollen, especially the tip. - Nasal catarrh involving frontal sinus. - Burning, throbbing in nose and sinuses. - Tightness at the root of the nose. - Violent sneezing. - Takes cold from every damp day. - Coryza, descending, with salivation and dyspnea. - Profuse, acrid, hot, watery discharge, wors e coolair. - Profuse, greenish, non-irritating discharges. - Discharge of watery, cool, greenish, irritating, corroding mucus. - Stuffiness and dryness of nose without discharge. - Ozaena with perforated septum. - Takes cold from every damp day. - Accumulation of very tenacious mucus in nostrils. - Loss of smell. - Perspiration - Profuse night sweats, which relieve. ### Throat - Dryness and itching in throat. - Stinging pain when swallowing or talking. - Larynx feels raw. - Laryngeal edema. - Loss of voice. - Sore throat of speakers. - Hoarseness with pain in chest. - Nasal, catarrhal voice. - Choking sensation from increased mucus. - Uvula swollen and elongated. - Enlarged tonsils. - Goiter sensi tive to contact. - Tongue - Epithelioma of tongue. - Blisters on tip of tongue, with burning pain. - Tongue white, swollen, shows impressions of teeth. - Severe pain at root of tongue, at night. ### Chest - Air-passages raw. - Chest pains go backwards. - Pain from sternum to back. - Constitutions - Hemorrhagic diathesis. - Gouty, rheumatic, syphilitic diathesis. - Cough - Violent cough, worse morning. - Dry, morning and evening, with sore ness of larynx, or rawness in throat. - Deep, hollow, with whitish and greenish sputum, and tearing pain starting from ensiform cartilage. - Hoarse, with pain through chest. - Heart feels very weak. - Fluttering of heart with nervousness. - Palpitations and darting pains worse when walking. - Aneurysm. - Endocarditis. - Valvular defects after repeated endocarditis. - Pulse weak, slow, soft. - Breasts - Atrophy of breasts. - Tumor of breast. - Galactorrhea. ### Stomach & Abdomen - Faintness at epigastrium. - Emptiness and qualmish feeling, not better eating. - Heartburn with flatulence. - Throbbing, painful burning. - Hiccough in evening. - Sensation as if water brash is occurring. - Nausea and vomiting with salivation. - Violent vomiting with copious salivation. - Rumbling and shrill noises in stomach. - Ratulence. - Teeth - Toothache nagging, as if a worm were digging in it. - Toothache at roots of teeth. - Jerking toothache worse at night, better warmth. - Teeth as if elongated. - Teeth decayed. - Gnawing pains. - Gums recede from loose teeth. - Gums swollen. - Gumboils. ### Urinary & Genital - Kidneys - Darting pains in k idney region. - Nephritis with pains in back. - Urine in creased with unquenchable thirst. - Painful urging to urinate, better appearance of menses. - Frequent urination of copious, clear, urine, worse before menses, at night. - Nocturnal bedwetting. - Whistling asthmatic breathing. - Asthma, of young people. - Dyspnea on ascending with pain in heart. - Difficult breathing on waking at night, with loss of voice. - Air hunger with flatulency in a.m., wakes choking. - Uterus feels as if squeezed during menses. - Leucorrhea, corrosive like meat washing. - Leucorrhea watery, acrid, milky white, green or yellow, purulent. - Mucus discharge from vagina. - Fibroid tumors. - Metritis. - Severe burning, tearing and twitching, in ovarian region. - Swelling and congestion of ovaries. ### Extremities - Severe bone pains. - Contraction of joints. - Periosteum thickened, especially tibia, sensitive to touch (Kali-bi., Asaf.). - Chronic arthritis. - Rheumatic pains at night and in damp weather. - Rheumatism of knees with effusion. - Pain in small of back and coccyx. - Pain in hip, forcing limping. - Sciatica, worse lying, on the affected side, sitting, standing, wakes him at night, better walking and flexing legs. - Formication of lower limbs when sitting, better lying down. - Tip of thumb ulcerates and turns yellow. ### Neck & Back - Small of the back as if in a vice. - Bruised pain in lumbar region worse sit ting bent. - Pain in coccyx, as from a fall. - Sharp pain in small of back when sitting. - Chronic rheumatism of chest and back. - Chills from sacrum up over back. ### Skin - Acne, hydroa. - Acne rosacea. - Hives. - Giant urticaria. - Erythema nodosum. - Rough nodules. - Small boils. - Itching eruptions worse heat. - Itching, generally better scratching, worse at night. - Itching herpes on face. - Purple spots, worse on legs. - Tendency to edematous swellings, eyelids, mouth, uvula, etc. - Furuncular eruption. - Pustular eruption, leaving scars. - Rupia syphilitica. - Vesicular eruptions. - Vesicles from exposure to sun. - Condylomata. ### Sleep - Restless sleep. - Frequent yawning without drowsiness. - Sleeplessness from anguish. - Weeps loudly during sleep, unconscious of it. - Horrid dreams. ### Generalities - As though head were enlarged, as if it were screwed in, as if a large quantity of water were forced into brain, as if it would be forced asunder. - As if a leaflet were at root of nose, as if a worm was crawling at root of nose. - Back as if in a vice. - As of a tumor in ovaries. - Pain in chest as if cut to pieces. - Bruised feel ing in coccyx.
