For this very\nreason, most people scorn it and hate to even touch it.  Yet, other\nmedicines like Psorinum and Syph linium are prepared from much\nmore loathsome and dangerous materials.\nDog\u2019s milk converted into homoeopathic form becomes a purely clean\nremedy.  One must not hesitate to use it.\n\nInitially, Dr. Reisig and Dr. Baya rds, on proving, found the extreme\nusefulness of this medicine.  After their death, Dr. Dyer pursued their\ncourse.  After him, Dr. Kent took ov er the use of this medicine, which\nhe used successfully on a vast arra y of diseases.  Its most prominent\nfeature is mental anguish and mental confusion .  The nerves\nbecome extremely excitable.  It is in  the nature of dogs that they jump\naround imaginary objects and start barking.  Probably, that is the\nbackground of storywriters\u2019 claims that the dogs can see ghosts and\nspirits.  The above-mentioned doctors did not have any background of\nthis sort of knowledge.  However, when the homoeopathic potency\nwas prepared from this milk, it was found on proving that a person\ngiven Lac Caninum starts seeing imaginary things (hallucinations) and\nfeels as if those things will jump over him and endanger him.  This is\nin the nature of the dog and through the supply of her milk, the human\nmind and the nervous system can be ma de to express certain illnesses.\nIf such ailments alread y exist, the homoeopathic form of the canine\nmilk has the capability to cure them.\n\nThis medicine has significant mental symptoms.  It also affects the\nglands.  It takes care of the enlarged glands .  When the glands\nbecome inflamed, the overlying skin becomes shiny but unattractive\nand tense.  Lac Caninum cures such wounds.\n\nIn Lac Caninum, the skin is extremely sensitive , more prominent in\nwomen as a result of which they keep their fingers spread apart.  If by\nchance, one finger happens to touch th e other, they scream.  Even the\nlightest touch of a cloth is unbearable.  This kind of hypersensitivity is\nalso found in Lachesis.  Sometimes, these two medicines can be used\nin the place of the other.  Another factor common to both Lachesis and\nLac Caninum is that their feelings  become very sharp and they are\nscared of even imaginary things.  In spite of these commonalities,\nthere are definite differences be tween the two.  A patient of Lac\nCaninum cannot be left alone, whil e the patient of Lachesis likes\nsolitude.  The ailments of Lachesis get aggravated after sleep and\nmove from the left to the right.\n\nMental and psychological symptoms:  A prominent feature of Lac\nCaninum is that while walking the patie nt feels as if he is floating in\nthe air.  He believes that whatever he is saying is a total lie and\nconsiders himself to be a liar. One specific symptom of a Lac\nCaninum patient is that he believe s that the nose he has on his face\nbelongs to somebody else, or that his body is not his own, or as if\nsomebody else is talking instead of himself.\n\nLac Caninum is also useful in the treatment of joint pains .  The\nfleeting muscle pains migrate from  one place to another like a quick\njump-over.  The pains are less in cold weather.   A beneficial response\nto cold is also seen in Ledum and Pulsatilla.  Pulsatilla is of a hot\nnature while Ledum is not.  Howeve r, joint pains belonging to both\nrespond very well to cold application to the extent that the patient\nwould like to put ice in the water to make it colder and then dip his\nfeet.  Joint pains associated with Ledum begin in the lower part of the\nbody and then migrate upwards.\n\nIn Lac Caninum, there is extreme sensitivity to light and noise.  While\nreading, vision becomes slightly blurred.  Sounds appear to be coming\nfrom a far off distance. Nearby sounds also feel as if they are moving\naway.  This condition is specific to Lac Caninum.\n\nLac Caninum is one of the best remedies for Diphtheria, especially\nwhen associated with the pain migr ating from one tonsil to the other\nand then to the first one again and so  on.  Diphtheria used to be a very\ncommon disease and its treatment wa s also very difficult.  But now,\npreventive vaccination has enabled us  to overcome this disease.  In\nthird world countries, however the sic kness still persists.  It is a very\ndangerous disease, associated with  greyish deposits in the throat,\nwhich become thicker layer over layer with deposits of more material,\nso much so that it can block the ai r passage.  There is great difficulty\nin breathing, while eating and drin king becomes almost impossible.\nDiphtherinum has been prepared from  the toxic matter of Diphtheria.\nIt should first be given in potency 200 and then gradually increased.\nFor further details, please refer to  the chapter on Diphtherinum.  If\nDiphtheria is associated with the ju mping of the discomfort from one\nside to the other and then back to  the first side again, Lac Caninum\nwould be the most optimal treatment .  Sometimes, even if Diphtheria\nhas been cured, the patient is left with permanent paralysis of the\nmuscles for swallowing.  Lac Caninum is very useful in the treatment\nof this condition.  In case somebody develops a heart problem after a\ncold or Diphtheria, Spigelia should be used first.  It controls the\nsickness there and then.  Some patients become unable to swallow due\nto the paralysis at the throat of the muscles for swallowing. In\nchildren, a similar condition can deve lop due to the w eakness of the\nmuscles rather than paralysis of th e muscles.  In this condition, Lac\nCaninum is very useful.  Its benefici al effect however, is only on the\nparalysed muscles, and not on musc les weakened due to some other\ncondition.\n\nLac Caninum is also related to ma ny diseases of women.  There is\npain over the uterus and both ovaries.  Once the menstrual blood flows\nfreely, most of the gynaecological troubles of the patient get better.  In\nthis respect, it is different from Cimicifuga in which as the menstrual\nbleeding flows freely, the ailments become aggravated.  Lac Caninum\nis useful in the treatment of those ailments that persist throughout the\nmonth but disappear at the onset of menstrual bleeding.  The throat\ntrouble starts with the onset of the period and disappears at the end of\nit.  This is a typical sign of Lac Caninum that mu st be kept in mind.\nIn all the systems of medical treatments other than homoeopathy, such\nsymptoms are not given much weig ht, but are considered imaginary\nand useless.  However, in th e field of homoeopathy, these odd\nsymptoms do point to one homoe opathic remedy or another.\nTherefore, it is necessary to remember them.  For example, irritation\nof the throat, starting before the on set of the periods  is a sign of\nMagnesia Carb.  This throat condition will not automatically get better\non the cessation of the periods.  Inst ead, it will have to be treated\nseparately.  The close relationship of  the trouble of th e throat and the\nperiods is a special feature of L ac Caninum.  In Calcarea Carb, like\nCimicifuga, the ailments become worse at the onset of the free flow of\nthe period.  However, in Calcarea Ca rb, the ailment is related to the\nthroat itself.  It does not originate from the affliction of internal\norgans.\n\nIn the case of Lac Caninum, the me nstrual blood contains big clots as\nif containing the shreds of the lining of the uterus, like Kreosotum.\nMenstruation starts rather early and is plentiful.  There is soreness\nover the mammary glands before me nstruation or during lactation.\nThey get inflamed.
