Calcarea Carbonica Ostrearum, Calc-c, Carbonate of Lime, Impure Carbonate of Lime.
Characterized by fear of loss of reason, of misfortune, of contagion, and of being observed. The patient is anxious, timid, and overwhelmed by tasks. There is a marked tendency toward apprehension about the future, often manifesting as a slow, plodding mental state with a lack of initiative.
Calcarea Carbonica is a deep-acting antipsoric and antisycotic remedy, primarily indicated for the 'Calcarea constitution': fair, fat, flabby, and slow-moving individuals. It is essential for disturbances of nutrition, defective ossification, and glandular swellings. The remedy acts profoundly on the lymphatic system, metabolism, and the process of growth, making it a cornerstone for children who are late in teething, walking, or closing of the fontanelles.
Aggravation: From exertion (mental or physical), cold air, cold water, dampness, washing, during full moon, and pressure of clothes. Amelioration: From dry weather, lying on the painful side, loosening garments, and rest.
Vertigo on ascending heights, or when walking in the open air. Often accompanied by a sensation of swaying or a feeling as if the head were spinning, especially after physical exertion or when rising from a stooping position.
Head is large, with cold, clammy sweat during sleep, particularly on the occiput and forehead, which wets the pillow. The fontanelles remain open too long in children. Headaches are often congestive, throbbing, or pressing, usually worse from cold air and mental exertion.
Photophobia, especially in bright daylight. There is a tendency toward lachrymation and inflammation of the lids. Vision may be blurred or exhibit spots before the eyes. Often associated with cataracts or corneal opacities in chronic cases.
Chronic otitis media with purulent discharge. Hearing is often impaired, with sensations of ringing, roaring, or buzzing in the ears. There may be a feeling of obstruction or pressure within the Eustachian tube.
Face is pale, bloated, and puffy, often with a sickly, yellowish, or chalky complexion. There may be swelling of the submaxillary glands and lips, which often crack or become chapped during cold weather.
Chronic nasal catarrh with thick, yellow, or fetid discharge. The nose is often stopped up, especially at night. It is a key remedy for nasal polyps and a sensitive sense of smell, sometimes experiencing phantom odors.
Teeth are slow to erupt or decay prematurely. The tongue is often coated white or feels thick. There is a sour taste in the mouth, and the gums may bleed easily or feel spongy and sensitive.
Tonsils are often chronically swollen and enlarged. There is a sensation of a lump in the throat, difficulty swallowing, and a tendency to catch colds that settle in the throat, often with a feeling of constriction.
Respiration is difficult, with a sensation of tightness or pressure in the chest. Cough is often dry and hacking at night, becoming loose during the day. It is a vital remedy for bronchitis and early stages of pulmonary conditions in scrofulous constitutions.
Appetite is voracious or erratic; a craving for eggs, chalk, lime, or indigestible things like dirt. There is an aversion to meat and a strong intolerance to milk. The abdomen is distended, hard, and painful, often with a feeling of coldness inside.
Frequent urination, especially at night. In women, menses are too early, too profuse, and last too long, often with a feeling of coldness in the head during the period. Leucorrhea is milky or burning.
Joints are weak and painful, with a tendency toward cracking. The feet are cold and damp, often described as having cold, wet stockings. There is a profound weakness in the limbs, making walking difficult for children.
Stiffness of the neck with swollen cervical glands. Pain in the small of the back, often described as a weakness or a sensation of soreness, worse from lifting or bending. Curvature of the spine in growing children.
Skin is unhealthy, prone to cracking, and slow to heal. Eruptions are often crusty or eczematous. There is a marked tendency toward warts, polyps, and keloids. The skin feels cold and clammy to the touch.
Sleep is restless, often disturbed by anxious dreams or night terrors, especially in children. The patient may wake up feeling tired or unrefreshed, often with night sweats or jerking of limbs during the onset of sleep.
General constitutional tendency toward obesity, sluggish circulation, and coldness. The patient is sensitive to cold, damp air. All excretions and discharges—sweat, stool, and urine—often have a sour, offensive odor. The remedy significantly influences calcium metabolism and systemic glandular health.
Belladonna, Rhus Tox, Lycopodium, and Silicea. Often, it is followed by Lycopodium or Silicea to complete the action in chronic cases where the patient's nutritional assimilation remains sluggish.
Bryonia and Sulphur are often considered inimical if administered too closely or in high potency without careful observation, as they may disrupt the deep-seated metabolic work initiated by Calcarea.
Calcarea follows well after Sulphur or Lycopodium. It is frequently followed by Silicea or Phosphorus in cases of rickets or delayed development, helping to solidify the bone structure and normalize systemic growth.
