Mayapple, Mandrake, Podophyllum.
The patient is often hypochondriacal, particularly regarding liver function. There is a sense of impending illness, irritability, and a feeling of being 'bilious.' In children, there may be moaning during sleep with half-open eyes.
Podophyllum acts primarily on the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and female reproductive organs. It is a powerful hepatic stimulant, inducing bilious states, congestion, and inflammation. Its most characteristic action is painless, gushing, profuse, yellow, watery diarrhea, often occurring in the morning. It is a key remedy for liver disorders involving portal congestion, prolapse of pelvic organs, and conditions arising from deranged biliary secretions.
Aggravation: Morning, especially early morning; during hot weather; during dentition. Amelioration: Lying on the abdomen; lying on the stomach; warmth; motion.
Vertigo is associated with a feeling of fullness in the head, often accompanied by a tendency to fall forward. It is frequently linked to liver congestion and bilious states.
Headache alternating with diarrhea. The headache is often congestive, located in the vertex or forehead, and is associated with a 'heavy' sensation, often relieved by physical exertion or movement.
Eyes are often sunken with dark blue rings around them. The eyelids may feel heavy and appear inflamed, often seen in children suffering from chronic gastrointestinal disturbances.
Ear symptoms are less prominent but may include earache associated with dentition or a feeling of fullness and pressure radiating from the throat or nasopharynx.
The face appears pale, drawn, and sickly. The expression is often anxious or 'old-looking' in children suffering from prolonged diarrheal episodes.
Nose symptoms are secondary, often presenting with a dry, irritated nasal mucosa during febrile or bilious states.
The tongue is broad, thick, and coated yellow or white, showing an imprint of the teeth. There is often excessive salivation, especially during sleep or teething. The breath is foul-smelling.
Sensation of fullness in the throat. Often associated with a dry, constricted feeling, or a lump in the throat that necessitates constant swallowing.
Respiration may be oppressed due to abdominal distension. There is a sense of heat in the chest, sometimes accompanied by palpitations that are sympathetic to liver or digestive distress.
This is the primary site of action. Characterized by gurgling, rumbling, and 'rolling' sensations in the abdomen. Stool is profuse, gushing, yellow, watery, and painless, often occurring in the morning. Prolapse of the rectum is common during or after stool. Liver area is sensitive and congested.
In females, there is a marked tendency toward prolapse of the uterus and ovaries. Pain in the right ovary is common, often radiating to the thigh. The urine may be suppressed or dark-colored due to liver involvement.
Joint pains, particularly in the knees, often shifting. There is a sensation of weakness and fatigue in the limbs, often associated with the depletion caused by frequent purging.
Pain in the lumbar region and sacrum, often associated with uterine prolapse or heavy, dragging sensations in the pelvis. Weakness in the spine is common.
Skin may appear yellowish or jaundiced, reflecting the underlying hepatic dysfunction. Itching may occur, especially in association with bilious complaints.
Sleep is often restless and disturbed. Children may sleep with eyes half-open, moaning or grinding their teeth. The patient often wakes early in the morning due to the pressure of stool.
The patient is generally worse in hot weather and during the early morning hours. There is a characteristic periodicity to the symptoms. The remedy is indicated in 'bilious' constitutions where the liver is either sluggish or overactive.
Calcarea Carbonica is often used as a complementary remedy in children with dentition issues and chronic diarrhea, helping to build constitutional strength after the acute state is managed by Podophyllum.
Lachesis is considered inimical as it may aggravate the condition if given too closely in sequence. Salt is considered an antidote to the effects of the remedy.
Mercurius follows well in cases of dysentery or hepatic congestion where the symptoms shift from watery, gushing stools to slimy, bloody, or tenesmus-heavy stools.
Aloe, Mercurius, Sulphur, Nux Vomica.
