Natrum Mur, Chloride of Sodium, Common Salt.

There is a marked fear of robbers, a tendency to weep when alone, and a feeling of being unloved or misunderstood. Irritability is common, often alternating with profound apathy.
Natrum Muriaticum is a profound polychrest remedy prepared from common salt. It acts deeply on the blood, mucous membranes, and nutrition, particularly in cases of chronic malnutrition, anemia, and cellular dehydration. It is the premier remedy for the effects of suppressed grief, disappointment, and lingering emotional trauma. Its keynote is a profound state of emaciation despite a ravenous appetite, intense craving for salt, and an aversion to bread and fatty foods. It is characterized by periodic disturbances, particularly headaches and intermittent fevers.
Aggravations: 10:00 AM, heat of the sun, sea air, exertion, consolation, lying down, and mental effort. Ameliorations: Open air, cold bathing, tight clothing, lying on the right side, and fasting.
Vertigo associated with anemia or after mental exertion. The patient feels a sense of spinning or instability, often accompanied by nausea and a sensation as if the head were falling forward. Worse in the morning and by movement.
Classic 'hammering' or 'blinding' migraine that begins with the sunrise and worsens until noon, gradually fading with the sunset. The pain is often described as if tiny hammers are beating on the brain. The scalp is often sensitive, and the hair falls out easily.
Eyelids are heavy, swollen, and inflamed. Vision is often blurred, with flashes of lightning before the eyes or dark spots. There is a sensation of sand or grit in the eyes, with acrid, watery discharge.
Roaring and ringing in the ears (tinnitus). Hearing is often impaired, with a sensation of fullness or obstruction. Chronic catarrhal conditions of the Eustachian tubes are common.
The face is often oily or greasy, particularly the forehead. There is a tendency to herpes labialis (cold sores) around the lips, especially during fevers. The lips are often cracked, particularly in the middle.
Violent coryza with watery, transparent discharge that later becomes thick and egg-white in consistency. Frequent sneezing, loss of smell, and a feeling of dryness in the nasal passages.
The tongue is mapped (geographic tongue) with red, insular patches. There is a deep crack in the center of the tongue. The mouth is dry, with a craving for salty foods and a marked aversion to bread.
Chronic sore throat with a sensation of a plug or a lump. The uvula is elongated, and the throat feels dry and raw. Swallowing is often difficult, especially of solids.
Palpitations of the heart that shake the body, especially when lying on the left side. Shortness of breath, particularly during physical exertion. A dry, hacking cough, often triggered by laughing or deep breathing.
Hunger is intense but the patient loses weight. Extreme craving for salt. Aversion to bread, fat, and coffee. Digestion is slow, leading to bloating and constipation with hard, dry, and difficult stools that crumble at the verge of the anus.
Involuntary urination when walking or coughing. In females, there is often a delayed or suppressed menses, or a thin, acrid, white discharge (leukorrhea). In males, there may be impotence or diminished libido despite amorous thoughts.
Hangnails are a characteristic keynote. The joints crack on movement. Weakness in the legs, especially in the morning. There is a tendency toward coldness of the extremities and numbness in the hands and feet.
Pain in the back that is relieved by lying on a hard surface or by firm pressure. There is a sensation of weakness in the spine, especially when walking. Stiffness in the neck with tension in the muscles.
Oily, shiny skin with a tendency toward acne or eczema. Eruptions are often found in the folds of the skin, such as the bends of the elbows or behind the ears. The skin is prone to hives and herpes, which are often aggravated by the sea.
Insomnia, particularly in the early morning hours, or difficulty falling asleep due to an overactive mind replaying past events. Dreams are vivid, often involving robbers or arguments.
The Natrum Mur patient is typically thin, emaciated, and anemic. They are highly sensitive to the sun and heat, which triggers migraines. They are physically 'dry' in their mucous membranes but may have oily skin. They feel physically and mentally better in the open air and by cold bathing.
Apis Mellifica, Sepia, and Ignatia. Apis is often required to finish the work started by Natrum Mur in cases of chronic edema or skin affections, while Sepia complements it in female hormonal and pelvic disturbances. Ignatia assists in the acute phase of grief before Natrum Mur addresses the chronic, hardened state of the sorrow.
Nitric Acid, Pulsatilla. It is generally advised not to administer these remedies immediately following Natrum Mur, as they may disrupt the action or cause a violent aggravation of the patient's symptoms.
Ignatia, Sepia, and Phosphorus. Ignatia leads the way in acute emotional shock; Natrum Mur follows to address the residual effects. Sepia is excellent for the subsequent constitutional weakness, and Phosphorus addresses the underlying nervous debility.
