The mental state is marked by extreme restlessness, anxiety, and a sense of impending death. There is often a religious mania, characterized by praying, howling, or an obsession with religious themes. The patient may be malicious, destructive, or exhibit a state of silent, stubborn brooding. A profound state of despair and mental prostration is constant.
Veratrum Album is a profound remedy for states of collapse, characterized by extreme coldness, blueness, and a cold sweat on the forehead. It acts primarily on the gastrointestinal tract and the circulatory system, inducing a state of rapid prostration, often associated with spasmodic and watery evacuations. Its keynotes include a combination of coldness of the body with a subjective feeling of heat, and the characteristic cold sweat on the forehead during any pain or stool.
Aggravation: From cold, drinking cold water, exertion, before and during stool, during menses, and night. Amelioration: From warmth, walking about, and by wrapping up warmly.
Vertigo is severe, often associated with sudden collapse or fainting. It is worse when rising from a stooping position or when standing. The patient feels as though they are spinning, often accompanied by coldness and visual disturbances.
Headaches are intense, often throbbing or bursting, accompanied by cold sweat on the forehead. The scalp may feel sensitive, and there is a sensation of coldness inside the brain. The head pain is frequently relieved by warmth and aggravated by motion.
The eyes appear sunken, glassy, and surrounded by dark circles. There is a fixed, staring expression with the lids often half-closed. Vision may be blurred or exhibit spots before the eyes, often associated with the fainting spells or sudden prostration.
Ears feel cold, and there may be a sensation of ringing or roaring. Hearing may be dulled during the height of the acute illness, reflecting the general depressed state of the nervous system.
The face is the mirror of the remedy: pale, blue, or livid, with a pinched, Hippocratic expression. The forehead is covered with cold, clammy sweat. There may be neuralgic pains in the face, feeling as though the bones are being crushed, worse from cold air.
The nose is cold and pointed. There may be a sense of dryness or loss of smell. In severe acute cases, the tip of the nose may turn blue or blackish, signaling a state of severe circulatory failure.
The tongue is cold, coated white or brown, and dry. There is an intense, unquenchable thirst for cold water, which is often vomited immediately upon reaching the stomach. The teeth may chatter from the intense chilliness.
The throat feels constricted, with a sensation of a lump or a tight band. Swallowing may be difficult, and there is often a feeling of coldness extending down the esophagus.
Respiration is rapid, shallow, and labored. The heart action is weak and irregular, often with a feeling of suffocation. There is a cold sensation in the chest, and the cough is often spasmodic, rattling, and exhausting.
The stomach is highly irritable, with violent, projectile vomiting of bile, blood, or watery matter. The abdomen is distended, painful, and sensitive to pressure. Stools are profuse, watery, rice-water-like, and accompanied by agonizing cramps, extreme exhaustion, and cold sweat.
Urinary output is often suppressed due to the severity of the fluid loss. In women, there is often a correlation between the gastrointestinal symptoms and severe dysmenorrhea, where the patient experiences the characteristic cold sweat and collapse during the menstrual flow.
Limbs are icy cold, trembling, and cramped. There is a sensation as if the joints were being pulled apart. Cramps in the calves are a very prominent feature, often occurring during the night or during the purging stages of an illness.
The back feels cold, as if ice were applied to the spine. There may be severe, cramping pains in the lumbar region, often extending to the limbs, worsening with any movement or exposure to cold.
The skin is cold, blue, and loses its elasticity. It may appear shriveled, especially after severe bouts of purging. There is a lack of reaction, and the skin feels like parchment.
Sleep is disturbed by anxiety, restlessness, and sudden jerking of the limbs. The patient may drift into a lethargic, stuporous state due to extreme exhaustion, yet be unable to find true rest.
The patient is profoundly chilly, yet paradoxically craves cold drinks. The remedy is indicated in states of collapse, cholera, and spasmodic conditions where the physical vitality is drained, and the hallmark is the cold, clammy sweat on the forehead combined with icy extremities.
Arsenicum Album is often considered the most complementary remedy, particularly in cases of cholera or gastrointestinal collapse, as it covers the deeper, more chronic exhaustion that may persist after the acute spasmodic state of Veratrum has subsided.
Cinchona (China) is generally considered inimical. Antidotes include Aconite, Camphora, Coffea, and Arsenicum. If the remedy has been pushed too far, these may be used to counteract the excessive prostration or the specific spasmodic symptoms.
It follows well after Cuprum and Arsenicum in acute bowel complaints. Frequently followed by Carbo Veg in states of extreme collapse where the vitality is nearly extinguished, or by Phosphorus in cases of persistent weakness or cardiac distress.
