Ambra, Ambergris, Ambr.
Extreme shyness and dread of people. The patient is unable to pass stool or urine in the presence of others. Marked mental exhaustion, with an inability to fix the attention or think clearly. Frequent fits of hysterical laughing and weeping. Aversion to social interaction and a desire for solitude. Melancholy, with a sense of being forsaken.
Ambra Grisea is primarily indicated for nervous, hysterical, and excitable temperaments. It acts profoundly upon the nervous system, addressing conditions characterized by extreme sensitivity, irritability, and physical weakness. It is the premier remedy for states of exhaustion following mental strain, prolonged grief, or the effects of senile decay. The drug is marked by a peculiar inability to perform bodily functions in the presence of others and a profound sense of psychological aversion to society.
Aggravation: From music, warm drinks, warm beds, lying down, reading aloud, and in the presence of other people. Amelioration: By cold air, cold food and drinks, moving about in the open air, and by lying on the painful side.
Vertigo occurring especially in old people, often associated with a feeling of weakness in the head. Dizziness accompanied by a sensation of being unable to stand steady, particularly in the morning or while listening to music.
Tearing pains in the upper part of the head, often occurring on one side. Sensation of coldness in the head. The scalp is sensitive to touch. Hair feels painful when touched. Headaches are often accompanied by a sense of intracranial heat and are worsened by music or mental exertion.
Eyes feel heavy and tired, especially in the morning. Vision is often blurred or dimmed, with a sensation of flickering before the eyes. The lids feel weak and may twitch intermittently.
Noises in the ears, such as ringing, buzzing, or rushing sounds. Hearing is often impaired, particularly in the elderly. Sensitive to loud noises, which cause a distressing sensation in the head.
Face often exhibits a pale or sickly expression. Tearing pains in the facial bones. Twitching of the facial muscles, especially the lips. A feeling of numbness or heat in the face, often alternating with chilliness.
Bleeding of the nose, particularly in the morning. Stuffed sensation in the nose with a loss of smell. Frequent sneezing and a feeling of dryness in the nasal passages.
Taste is often bitter or sour. The teeth may feel loose or exhibit tearing pains. The tongue is coated, often with a sensation of dryness despite the presence of saliva. Fetid breath is common.
Sensation of a lump in the throat, especially during swallowing. Dryness and irritation of the pharynx. The throat feels constricted, making it difficult to swallow solid food.
Spasmodic cough, often occurring in violent paroxysms. Oppression of the chest with a sensation of pressure. Heart palpitations arising from nervous exhaustion or emotional excitement. The cough is characteristically worse from talking or reading aloud.
Extreme sensitivity in the stomach region. Eructations that are loud and spasmodic. Abdominal pain with a sense of distension. Stool is often difficult to pass, particularly when others are nearby, leading to chronic constipation.
Frequent urging to urinate, but with difficulty in starting the stream in the presence of others. In women, the menses are early and profuse, often accompanied by bluish discharge. In men, there is increased sexual excitement followed by extreme exhaustion.
Numbness and tingling in the fingers and toes. Tearing pains in the joints and limbs. Heaviness of the legs, with a sensation as if the feet were asleep. The limbs feel weak and tremulous, especially after exertion.
Stiffness of the neck and back, particularly after sleeping. Aching in the lumbar region, with a sensation of coldness in the back. The spine feels weak and sensitive to pressure.
Skin is sensitive and prone to itching, especially on the chest and arms. Burning sensations in the skin. Eruptions that are dry and scaly, or sometimes manifesting as small, red, itchy spots.
Disturbed sleep, often with frequent waking and vivid, anxious dreams. Difficulty falling asleep due to an overactive mind or nervous agitation. Patient feels unrefreshed upon waking.
The constitution is thin and nervous. Marked intolerance to warmth, especially warm rooms and beds. The patient is sensitive to music and loud noises. General weakness is a hallmark, appearing as a result of nervous depletion or the aging process.
Staphysagria and Pulsatilla are highly complementary. Staphysagria often follows when the emotional suppression and nervous excitability remain, while Pulsatilla helps to resolve remaining catarrhal states or circulatory imbalances that Ambra Grisea has initiated the healing process for.
Camphora and Nux Vomica are generally considered inimical or antidotal to the action of Ambra Grisea. Their use should be avoided during treatment as they tend to neutralize the therapeutic effect or cause an aggravation of the nervous symptoms.
Ambra Grisea follows well after Ignatia, especially in cases of grief or emotional shock where nervous exhaustion has set in. It is also well-followed by Phosphorus in cases of general debility and by Silicea when the nervous system requires deeper constitutional support.
