Pheasant's Eye, Adonis, Adon.
The mental state reflects the physical distress of the heart. There is a sense of apprehension, anxiety regarding the heart's function, and a general feeling of impending doom associated with dyspnea.
Adonis Vernalis is a potent heart tonic, acting primarily on the myocardium. It is indicated in cardiac dropsy, valvular insufficiency, and cardiac weakness characterized by low arterial tension. Its keynote is the regulation of the heart rhythm, particularly when the pulse is rapid, irregular, and feeble. It is an excellent remedy for hydrothorax and generalized edema resulting from failing heart action, where the kidneys are also failing to excrete sufficient urine.
Aggravation: From physical exertion, lying down, and movement. Amelioration: From resting in a sitting position, and generally by quietude.
Vertigo is present, often associated with cerebral anemia or fluctuations in blood pressure. The patient feels dizzy upon rising or changing positions.
Dull, heavy headache, often secondary to cardiac insufficiency. There may be a feeling of pressure in the forehead and temples, worse from exertion.
Visual disturbances due to circulatory issues. The eyes may appear sunken or dull, with potential blurring of vision in advanced cardiac failure.
Tinnitus or ringing in the ears may occur due to irregular circulation; hearing may feel muffled.
The face is often pale, bloated, or cyanotic, reflecting poor oxygenation. Expression is anxious and tired.
Nasal symptoms are generally secondary, but there may be dryness of the mucous membranes associated with systemic fluid imbalance.
The tongue may be coated or pale, with a tendency toward dryness. Digestion is often sluggish.
Sensation of constriction or dryness in the throat, often linked to the general respiratory distress.
The most vital sphere of action. Dyspnea is severe, especially when lying down (orthopnea). The heart action is irregular, weak, and rapid. There is a sensation of oppression in the chest with hydrothorax and localized edema.
Loss of appetite, nausea, and a feeling of weight in the epigastrium. Ascites may be present as part of the general dropsical condition.
Keynote symptom: Scanty, high-colored urine. The kidneys are congested, and the remedy acts as a diuretic by improving heart action and renal blood flow.
Edema of the feet and legs (cardiac dropsy) is a hallmark. There is physical weakness, heaviness, and a tendency toward coldness of the extremities.
Stiffness or aching in the back, often associated with the general malaise and fluid retention in the tissues.
Skin may be pale, cold, or edematous. In chronic cases, the skin may appear stretched or shiny due to excessive subcutaneous fluid.
Sleep is broken and unrefreshing. The patient is often unable to lie flat, leading to insomnia and restlessness during the night due to breathlessness.
A remedy for the failing heart. It increases the force of the heart contraction and slows the rate, thereby improving circulation, increasing urinary output, and reducing dropsical swelling.
Apocynum and Arsenicum Album are often complementary in cases of cardiac dropsy, helping to manage fluid retention and extreme exhaustion when the initial heart rhythm has been stabilized by Adonis.
There are no strictly inimical remedies noted in classical literature, but it should be used with caution when the patient is already under the influence of strong digitalis preparations to avoid cumulative toxicity.
It follows well after or alongside remedies like Crataegus when the heart muscle requires nutritional support, or after Spongia in cases of cardiac hypertrophy with respiratory distress.
Digitalis, Strophanthus, Convallaria, Crataegus.
