Cannabis Sativa Indica, Indian Hemp, Cannab.
The cardinal feature is a distortion of time and space; seconds seem like ages and a few feet like miles. The mind is filled with exalted, fantastic ideas and rapid, overflowing thoughts. The patient may show excessive, uncontrollable laughter, even in serious situations. There is a marked tendency toward religious fervor, absent-mindedness, and an inability to finish sentences because the thoughts change too rapidly.
Cannabis Indica acts primarily upon the nervous system, producing a state of intoxication characterized by sensory and temporal distortion. Its therapeutic action is centered on the production of phantasmagoria, where the patient experiences an exaggeration of time and space. The remedy is indicated in conditions involving mental confusion, hallucinations, and involuntary laughter. It is a powerful agent for hysteria, catalepsy, and spasmodic affections where the mind is overly active while the body feels disconnected.
Aggravation: From being in the open air, from cold, from mental exertion, from noise, and from talking. Amelioration: By rest, by lying down, by warmth, and by closing the eyes.
Vertigo is marked by a sensation of lightness in the head, often accompanied by a feeling of falling or rising. It is aggravated by closing the eyes or moving the head suddenly. The vertigo is frequently associated with a dull, heavy pressure in the forehead.
Headaches are described as a sensation of the brain being like a boiling fluid. There is a heavy, throbbing pain in the vertex, often associated with a feeling that the top of the head is opening and shutting. The head feels heavy and full, worse from mental exertion and better from absolute rest.
The eyes are often injected and glassy, with a fixed stare. Vision is blurred or distorted, with the patient seeing flashes of light or halos around objects. The eyelids feel heavy and paralyzed, with a marked tendency to droop.
Ringing and buzzing in the ears (tinnitus) are common, often accompanied by a sensation of water dripping or a feeling of fullness. Hearing may be acute or dulled, with the patient experiencing a sensation as if the ears were blocked.
The face may appear flushed or pale, with a dazed or vacant expression. There is a sensation of heat in the face, and sometimes a feeling as if the skin were stretched too tightly. The lips may feel dry and cracked.
The nose is often stuffed, with a feeling of dryness in the nasal passages. There may be a sense of smell that is abnormally acute or distorted, with occasional sneezing or coryza that is worsened by cold air.
The mouth and throat are characterized by intense dryness, often causing a sticky feeling. The tongue may be coated with a white or yellowish fur. There is an increased appetite, sometimes bordering on voracity, followed by a sensation of emptiness.
The throat feels constricted and dry, with a sensation as if a lump were present. Swallowing may be difficult, and there is often a constant need to clear the throat of thick, tenacious mucus.
Respiration is often labored or oppressed, with a feeling of constriction in the chest. A dry, hacking cough may be present, often worse at night. The heart may show symptoms of tachycardia or a sensation of fluttering.
There is a significant increase in appetite, often manifesting as a ravenous hunger or cravings for specific foods. Digestion is slow, often accompanied by flatulence and a sensation of burning in the stomach region. The abdomen may feel bloated or distended.
The urine is often passed in drops, with a constant, painful urging. There is a burning sensation during urination, and the urine may be cloudy. In the genital sphere, it is indicated for increased sexual desire (nymphomania) or, conversely, a state of impotence due to nervous exhaustion.
There is a feeling of weakness and heaviness in the limbs, with a sensation as if the limbs were paralyzed. Coordination is often impaired, leading to a staggering gait. Joints may ache with a rheumatic, tearing pain that is worse in cold weather.
The back feels weak and weary, with a sensation of stiffness in the neck muscles. There may be a dull aching pain in the lumbar region, often worse during movement or when sitting for long periods.
The skin may feel dry and hot, with an intense itching or a sensation as if insects were crawling over the body. Eruptions are rare, but the skin may show signs of pallor or flushing depending on the emotional state.
Sleep is often disturbed by vivid, fantastic, or terrifying dreams. The patient may suffer from insomnia due to the racing of thoughts. When sleep does occur, it is often unrefreshing, and the patient wakes up feeling as tired as when they went to bed.
The patient is generally sensitive to cold and prefers warmth, though the mental state is often aggravated by close, stuffy rooms. There is a general feeling of nervous exhaustion, where the body is unable to keep pace with the hyperactive mind.
Helleborus and Lycopodium are often considered complementary. Helleborus helps in cases of mental stupor or hydrocephalic symptoms where the initial excitement of Cannabis Indica has faded into a dull, unresponsive state, while Lycopodium aids in chronic digestive or urinary complaints associated with the patient's underlying constitution.
Strong acids, vinegar, and lemon juice act as antidotes. It is also incompatible with heavy doses of coffee or tobacco, which can neutralize its effects or produce erratic symptoms during the course of treatment.
Follows well after Belladonna and Hyoscyamus in cases of delirium and mania. It is often followed by Calcarea Carbonica or Phosphorus when the constitutional weakness and nervous exhaustion become the prominent feature of the case.
Hyoscyamus, Belladonna, Stramonium, Anacardium
