The patient is deeply melancholic, feeling as if a black cloud has settled over her. There is an intense fear of impending insanity, dread of death, and a tendency toward talkativeness or excessive brooding. The patient is nervous, irritable, and prone to sudden outbursts of grief or terror.
Cimicifuga acts primarily upon the cerebrospinal system, the uterus, and the muscles. It is a premier remedy for neuralgic conditions, rheumatism of the muscular tissues, and various uterine displacements. Its keynote is the alternation of physical symptoms with mental depression, often characterized by a nervous, restless, and melancholic state. It is indicated in women who are prone to uterine irritation, spasmodic pains, and menstrual irregularities, where the pain is often proportional to the flow.
Aggravation: During the menstrual period, from cold air, cold drafts, damp weather, evening and night, and by motion. Amelioration: From warmth, eating, and lying down quietly.
Vertigo is often associated with uterine or cardiac disturbances. The patient feels light-headed, as if the top of the head were flying off, or as if intoxicated. It is worse from movement and often accompanies the headache.
Severe, throbbing, bursting headaches, especially in the vertex or occiput. The pain often radiates to the eyes. The head feels heavy and full, as if the brain were too large for the cranium. Worse from mental exertion and during the menstrual cycle.
Photophobia is common, with pain in the eyeballs that feels as if they were being pressed backward. The vision may be blurred, and there is often a sensation of soreness in the muscles surrounding the orbits.
Sensitive to noise, with buzzing or ringing sounds. There is often a sensation of fullness or pressure in the ears, sometimes associated with the neuralgic pains of the face.
Facial neuralgia is frequent, often affecting the left side. The face may appear flushed or pale during paroxysms of pain. There is a sensation of tension in the muscles of the face.
Dryness of the nasal passages with occasional coryza that is thin and watery. The sense of smell may be acutely sensitive to odors.
The tongue is often clean or has a thick, white coating. There may be a bitter or metallic taste in the mouth, particularly in the morning. Teeth may feel sensitive or as if they are too long.
Sensation of a lump or a dry, constricted feeling in the throat. The muscles are stiff, making swallowing difficult. Often indicated in pharyngitis with dry, hacking cough.
Pains in the chest are typically rheumatic or neuralgic. The heart feels as if it were grasped by a hand. There is oppression, shortness of breath, and a sensation of weight in the precordial region.
Sinking sensation in the epigastrium, often described as 'all-gone' feeling. The abdomen is distended, especially during menstruation. Colicky, spasmodic pains in the uterus, as if the parts were being squeezed.
The most important sphere of action. Indicated for dysmenorrhea, where pain is severe and radiates to the thighs. Menstrual flow is irregular, dark, and accompanied by intense emotional distress. During pregnancy, it is useful for false labor pains.
Rheumatic pains in the large muscles of the arms, thighs, and calves. The limbs feel weak and heavy, with a tendency toward cramping. There is a marked sensation of numbness or prickling in the extremities.
Stiffness and contraction of the muscles of the neck and back. The spine is extremely sensitive to touch, with a sensation of aching or burning along the vertebrae. The back feels weak as if it would give way.
Skin may be dry and sensitive. There is a tendency toward itching that is aggravated by external cold. May be useful in certain cases of mammary irritation or lumps.
Insomnia is a persistent feature, often due to the racing of thoughts or the constant pain. Dreams are often vivid, terrifying, or related to the day's anxieties.
General constitutional weakness with a specific affinity for the muscular and fibrous tissues. The patient is highly sensitive to cold, damp environments. All symptoms show a marked tendency to shift from mental to physical planes.
Caulophyllum is the most important complementary remedy, especially in cases of labor pains and uterine inertia. It helps to complete the action of Cimicifuga in resolving rheumatic conditions associated with the female reproductive system.
There are no strictly inimical remedies, but it is often antidoted by Gelsemium, Ignatia, and Mercurius. Care should be taken when prescribing in proximity to these remedies if the patient has a sensitive constitution.
It follows well after Pulsatilla in cases of menstrual suppression and after Gelsemium in cases of rheumatic pains. It is often followed by Sepia or Lilium Tigrinum when the uterine symptoms persist.
