Crocus, Saffron, Croc-s.
The mental state is marked by extreme changeability. Laughter alternates with sadness, anger, or singing. The patient may be affectionate one moment and violent the next. There is a tendency toward hysterical gaiety, excessive joy, and a paradoxical state of mind where the patient may feel that everything is a joke, followed by deep remorse or weeping.
Crocus Sativus acts primarily upon the nervous system and the circulatory system, specifically manifesting in hemorrhages of dark, stringy, clotted blood. It is a profound remedy for hysterical states, characterized by extreme volatility of mood and sensations of internal movement. The defining keynote is the sensation of something living, jumping, or kicking within the abdomen or other parts of the body, often associated with pregnancy or phantom pregnancy states.
Aggravated by the morning, while fasting, in the house, by warmth, during pregnancy, and from becoming overheated. Ameliorated by the open air, by cooling the body, and by pressure.
Vertigo is associated with a feeling of intoxication or confusion. It is often accompanied by a dull headache and is worse when looking at bright, moving objects or when in a warm room.
Headaches are often described as pressing or throbbing, particularly in the temples and forehead. The head feels heavy, and the eyes may feel pulled or strained. Pain is often worse from stooping and better in the open air.
There is a sensation as if the eyes were full of dust or as if they were being pulled backward. Vision may be blurred or hazy. Eyelids are heavy and may twitch or blink frequently. The eyes are often sensitive to light and may feel fatigued after reading.
The ears may experience humming or buzzing sounds, often associated with congestion or the hysterical state of the patient. There is an occasional sensation of pressure or blockage in the eustachian tubes.
The face is often pale, earthy, or yellowish, especially in cases of chronic uterine disease. There may be sensations of burning or flushing, and at times, the face appears bloated or puffy, reflecting the underlying circulatory disturbances.
Frequent epistaxis (nosebleed) is a hallmark symptom. The blood is characteristically dark, thick, and viscid, often forming long strings. There may be a sensation of dryness or tickling in the nasal passages.
The tongue may be coated or feel dry and sticky. There is often a metallic or bitter taste in the mouth. The gums may bleed easily, mirroring the general hemorrhagic tendency of the remedy.
There is a feeling of fullness or a lump in the throat, known as globus hystericus. Swallowing may feel difficult, and there is often a constant desire to clear the throat of thick, tenacious mucus.
Respiration may be labored or accompanied by a dry, hacking cough. The patient experiences a sensation of constriction in the chest. Palpitations of the heart are common, often triggered by emotional excitement or anxiety.
This is the most critical area for the remedy. The sensation of something alive, jumping, or kicking in the abdomen is pathognomonic. There is often bloating, fermentation, and a feeling of heaviness after eating. Bowel movements may be irregular, with a tendency toward dark, clotted blood in the stool.
The female reproductive system is the primary seat of action. Menses are early, profuse, and consist of dark, stringy, clotted blood. There is a strong tendency for uterine hemorrhage. The sensation of a fetus kicking is a classic symptom, even in the absence of pregnancy.
The limbs may feel heavy, weak, or restless. There is often a sensation of twitching or jerking in the muscles, consistent with the remedy's action on the nerves. Hands and feet may feel cold or numb, particularly in the morning.
There may be a sensation of stiffness or tension in the neck muscles. Backache is sometimes present, particularly in the lumbar region, often associated with uterine congestion or menstrual irregularities.
The skin may appear dry and sallow. There is a tendency toward easy bruising, and small wounds may bleed excessively with dark, tenacious blood that refuses to clot quickly.
Sleep is often disturbed by anxious, vivid dreams. The patient may wake up feeling unrefreshed or with a sense of agitation. Insomnia is frequently associated with the patient's hysterical anxiety or internal restlessness.
The patient is generally sensitive to heat and feels better in the open air. There is a marked tendency toward hemorrhages of dark, viscid blood from any orifice. The constitutional state is one of nervous irritability, rapid mood fluctuations, and a feeling of internal motion.
Crocus Sativus is often complemented by Platina and Pulsatilla. In cases of uterine hemorrhage where the flow is dark and clotted, these remedies help complete the curative process by addressing the underlying hormonal and emotional dysregulation associated with the patient's constitution.
Aconite and Opium are generally considered inimical or antidotal. Their use should be avoided in close proximity to Crocus Sativus as they may counteract the therapeutic action on the nervous system or produce undesirable suppressive effects on the characteristic hemorrhages.
It follows well after Belladonna in cases of cerebral congestion or intense headache, and after Pulsatilla when the emotional state is dominated by hysteria and changing moods. It is also useful after Sabina in cases of uterine bleeding with dark, stringy clots.
