Belladonna
Deadly Nightshade
Belladonna is suited for patients presenting with acute, intense inflammatory or neurological conditions, primarily affecting the neurological system, respiratory tract, skin, and systemic vitality, marked by sudden high fever, throbbing pain, redness, and hypersensitivity. Neurological symptoms include throbbing headaches, delirium, or convulsions, resembling migraines, acute confusional states, or febrile seizures, often with photophobia or hyperacusis, worse with light, noise, or jarring. Respiratory symptoms involve sore throat, tonsillitis, or dry cough, often with a bright red, inflamed appearance, resembling streptococcal pharyngitis or scarlet fever, worse with heat or swallowing. Skin symptoms feature hot, red, or burning eruptions, resembling scarlet fever rash or erysipelas, worse with heat or touch. Systemic symptoms include high fever, flushed face, and profuse sweating, resembling systemic inflammatory response syndrome or influenza, with a marked sensitivity to external stimuli. Psychological symptoms include restlessness, agitation, or vivid hallucinations during fever, resembling delirium, worse at night or in warm environments. The remedy is highly relevant for acute, rapid-onset conditions with a strong inflammatory or neurological component, commonly observed in individuals with robust constitutions or intense, reactive symptoms.
Clinical Insights
- In the case of increased swelling, Belladonna or Aconite should also be administered.
- Like Aconite, a sudden onset of the disease typifies Belladonna, though the disease process is more prolonged.
Keynotes
- Restlessness or agitation during fever, with a tendency to startle or react intensely, resembling delirium or acute stress reaction, worse at night or in warm environments.
- Throbbing, burning, or aching pains in joints or muscles, resembling acute arthritis or myalgia, worse with motion, heat, or touch.
- High fever with sudden onset, often with chills followed by intense heat, resembling influenza, scarlet fever, or systemic inflammatory response syndrome, worse in heat or warm rooms.
Modalities
Worse: Heat (air, rooms, sun), light, noise, touch, jarring, motion, lying flat, night (especially 3 p.m. to midnight), warm drinks, drafts, tight clothing.
Better: Cool air, rest, semi-erect position, dark quiet environments, light covering, bending backward, firm pressure (on painful areas).
Symptoms

- Irritability or anger, particularly when disturbed by light, noise, or touch, with a desire for solitude or quiet, worse during pain or fever.

- Throbbing, pulsating headaches, often unilateral or frontal, resembling migraines or tension-type headaches, with a sensation of fullness or bursting, worse with light, noise, motion, or heat.
- Delirium or acute confusional states, with restlessness, vivid hallucinations, or incoherent speech, resembling febrile delirium or toxic encephalopathy, worse during high fever or at night.
- Convulsions or febrile seizures, particularly in children, with twitching, stiffness, or staring spells, worse with heat or jarring, resembling epilepsy or fever-induced seizures.
Extremities
- Throbbing, burning, or aching pains in joints or muscles, resembling acute arthritis or myalgia, worse with motion, heat, or touch.
- Stiffness or twitching in limbs, often linked to fever or neurological irritation, worse at night or with jarring.
Generalities
- High fever with sudden onset, often with chills followed by intense heat, resembling influenza, scarlet fever, or systemic inflammatory response syndrome, worse in heat or warm rooms.
- Profuse sweating, particularly on the face or head, with a hot, flushed appearance, worse during fever or at night.
- Rapid, bounding pulse and dilated pupils, often linked to intense inflammatory or febrile states, worse with heat or excitement.
Potency and Dosage
Mother Tincture or usually 30, 200, 1000 or CM, depending upon the situation and the experience of the homoeopath.
Combinations
- If there is lots of blood congestion of the ears associated with a reddish glow on the face, one should also add Belladonna 30 to Pulsatilla.
- If heat aggravates the symptoms, Belladonna 1000 and Aconite 1000 should also be added to Apis and repeated 2 to 3 times within 15 minutes.
- If the injured area is flushed and swollen due to increased local circulation, Belladonna should also be given along with Arnica for better response.
- If the pressure inside the eye is elevated, Belladonna and Arnica must also be used.
