Typical Findings: Hyperinflation of the lungs, flattening of the diaphragms, peribronchial thickening ("cuffing"), and patchy areas of atelectasis. Consolidation may indicate bacterial pneumonia.
Clinical Importance: Not routinely recommended for the diagnosis of typical bronchiolitis due to characteristic clinical findings and lack of impact on management. However, it can be useful in severe or atypical presentations.
A. Lifestyle Modifications
The prognosis for most infants with bronchiolitis is excellent. It is typically a self-limiting illness lasting 2-3 weeks, with the most severe symptoms resolving within 5-7 days. Most infants recover fully without long-term complications. However, some children, particularly those hospitalized for severe bronchiolitis, may experience recurrent wheezing or develop asthma later in childhood.
