Corneal dystrophies are a group of rare, progressive, non-inflammatory, bilateral, and typically inherited disorders characterized by the abnormal accumulation of material in the cornea. Unlike corneal degenerations, which are often age-related or secondary to systemic illness, dystrophies are genetically linked, often manifesting in the central cornea and resulting in gradual vision impairment.
Most corneal dystrophies are inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion, though some (like macular corneal dystrophy) are autosomal recessive.
