CJD is caused by the misfolding of a normal cellular protein called the prion protein ($PrP^C$) into an abnormal, disease-causing isoform ($PrP^{Sc}$).


  • Sporadic (sCJD): Accounts for ~85% of cases. Occurs spontaneously without an identifiable cause.
