Hyperopia is a common refractive error of the eye where light rays entering the eye focus behind the retina instead of directly on it. This occurs because the eyeball is too short or the cornea/lens has insufficient curvature, resulting in blurred near vision and, in high degrees, blurred distance vision.
Hyperopia is primarily caused by anatomical variations in the eye. Genetic factors play a significant role, as it is often hereditary. Environmental factors such as limited time spent outdoors in childhood have also been linked to refractive development.
In a healthy eye (emmetropia), light converges perfectly on the retina. In hyperopia, the optical power is too weak for the axial length of the eye. The ciliary muscles must constantly contract to increase the lens curvature (accommodation) to bring the image forward onto the retina. Chronic over-accommodation leads to visual fatigue.
Hyperopia affects approximately 5% to 10% of the population, though prevalence varies significantly by age and ethnicity. It is nearly universal in infants but typically decreases as the eye grows throughout childhood.

Inspection reveals no obvious external abnormalities. Visual acuity testing shows diminished near vision. Cover-uncover testing may reveal esophoria.

Biometry: Measures axial length to confirm anatomical shortness of the globe.
A. Lifestyle Modifications: Proper lighting, taking breaks during reading (20-20-20 rule).
B. Preventive Measures: Frequent outdoor time in childhood.
C. Medical Treatment: Cycloplegic drops (rarely used for treatment, mainly for exam).
D. Surgical Treatment: LASIK, PRK, or Phakic Intraocular Lens (IOL) implantation.
E. Interventional Procedures: Clear lens extraction for high hyperopia.
F. Rehabilitation: Vision therapy for accommodative dysfunction.
G. Emergency Management: Refer to ophthalmology if acute pain suggests angle-closure.
Generally excellent. Refractive errors are easily corrected with lenses or surgery. If uncorrected, children may develop strabismus or amblyopia.
Early childhood vision screening is critical to prevent amblyopia.
