Laryngitis is the inflammation of the larynx (voice box) resulting in the disruption of vocal fold vibration. It typically presents with hoarseness or loss of voice. Most cases are acute and viral in origin, resolving spontaneously, while chronic cases may be related to environmental irritants or systemic disorders.
Etiology includes viral infections (rhinovirus, influenza), excessive voice strain, inhalation of chemical irritants (smoke, allergens), GERD, and bacterial infections (rare, e.g., Group A Streptococcus).
Inflammation causes vasodilation and edema of the laryngeal mucosa. This edema increases the mass and decreases the elasticity of the vocal folds, altering the mucosal wave and resulting in dysphonia. In chronic cases, repetitive irritation leads to squamous metaplasia or polypoid degeneration.
Laryngitis affects all age groups. Acute viral laryngitis is seasonal, peaking in winter. Chronic laryngitis is more prevalent in adults aged 30–60, particularly those with high occupational vocal demands or heavy tobacco/alcohol use.
