D-dimer
Type: Blood Test
Purpose: To rule out deep vein thrombosis (DVT), particularly if symptoms suggest acute thrombotic event.
Expected Findings: Negative (normal) in uncomplicated varicose veins. Elevated in DVT.
Interpretation: An elevated D-dimer warrants further investigation, typically with ultrasound, to exclude DVT. Complete Blood Count (CBC)
Type: Blood Test
Purpose: To assess for signs of infection if ulceration is present.
Expected Findings: May show leukocytosis (elevated white blood cell count) if infection is present.
Interpretation: Elevated WBC count may indicate a bacterial infection associated with venous ulcers.
Duplex Ultrasound
Purpose: The gold standard for diagnosing varicose veins. It visualizes the venous anatomy, identifies incompetent valves, assesses the direction and duration of blood flow (reflux), and detects any associated deep vein thrombosis.
Typical Findings: Dilated superficial veins, evidence of venous reflux (backward flow lasting >0.0 seconds), incompetent valves (e.g., saphenofemoral junction, saphenopopliteal junction, or perforator veins), patent deep venous system.
Clinical Importance: Essential for guiding treatment decisions, distinguishing between superficial and deep venous insufficiency, and ruling out DVT.
A. Lifestyle Modifications
The prognosis for varicose veins is generally good, especially with timely and appropriate treatment. Modern minimally invasive treatments have high success rates in alleviating symptoms and improving cosmetic appearance. However, varicose veins are a chronic condition, and recurrence can occur over time in other veins, or sometimes in the treated vein if ablation is incomplete or new veins develop. Untreated, they can lead to chronic venous insufficiency, skin changes, and debilitating venous ulcers.
