Yellow fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes of the Aedes and Haemagogus genera. It is characterized by fever, jaundice, and potential organ failure, primarily affecting the liver and kidneys.
Caused by the Yellow Fever virus (YFV), an RNA virus of the Flaviviridae family. It is an arbovirus transmitted through the bite of infected female mosquitoes. It exists in three transmission cycles: sylvatic (jungle), intermediate (savannah), and urban.
Upon inoculation, the virus replicates in local lymph nodes before disseminating to the liver, spleen, kidneys, and bone marrow.
