Gestational hypertension is defined as the new onset of elevated blood pressure (systolic ≥140 mmHg or diastolic ≥90 mmHg) occurring after 20 weeks of gestation in a previously normotensive woman, in the absence of proteinuria or signs of end-organ dysfunction. It is a diagnosis of exclusion that necessitates close monitoring to prevent progression to preeclampsia.

It affects approximately 6–10% of all pregnancies. Prevalence is higher in primiparous women, those with advanced maternal age, and those with a personal or family history of hypertensive disorders.
